FreeDance

Freedance is Principle 4 from the Nia White Belt,
and is an important part of every Nia class.
There are 8 Steps to the Freedance Process, although most classes use only 1 or 2 of these.

In this workshop, you ‘ll learn the 8 Stages of Freedance, you’ll get a chance to focus on each stage individually, and as a whole to appreciate the creative expression of Nia Freedance.

This is a great opportunity for everyone to learn what Freedance is really about, how to get the most out of this segment of a Nia class and feel relaxed and confident while doing Freedance.

Nia Experiences, Submitted by Students

Nia opened my heart chakra and gave me the courage to follow my path by pushing me outside of my comfort zone.  Through Marcia's classes, I reconnected with my self again and regained the courage to follow my dreams of starting my own business.  Listening to your body and dancing seems simple, but the end results can be extraordinary.

Even though I've only been taking Nia classes for a few months, already it's changing aspects of my life, and I expect it to change more. In opening my mind and body to moving in different ways, I'm finding that parts of my mind, heart and emotions are opening as well. Sometimes in class, I have a sudden wave of emotion as some long-ago experience comes to the surface. It's not something I expect or can even anticipate, but there's something about the music, and being focused through the movements that allows these feelings to come up for air. To give you an example, I have been questioning whether I should continue on my current career path, or whether it's time to take a different road. One day in Nia class, we were doing some slow purposeful movements. I was completely focused on the movement, yet I heard a clear voice in my head, my own voice, that said,
"It's time to go." I knew exactly what it meant, and suddenly felt this immense relief that I wasn't struggling with the decision anymore. I'm not sure when or how I came to the decision that I needed to leave, but I know the moment when I heard the decision. For me, Nia occupies my physical body and mind in such a way that I can listen to other things happening in my emotional body and mind. It's a little scary, because I can't predict when I'm going to become emotional or when I'm going to finally realize something that I already suspect. But I look forward to each class, knowing that it's pushing my body and my mind in ways that will continue to affect the decisions I make. Thanks, Marcia, for sharing Nia and creating a safe place for emotional, physical and spiritual exploration!

Today I came to your class for the second time.  The first time I came I felt a very noticeable sense of pleasure for the rest of the day – maybe even into the following day.  It was so refreshing.  Then today when I came in I was having pain and stiffness in my lower back.  When I left my pain was gone, and now, over 2 hours later, I feel even more flexible.  What a relief.  I injured by back almost a year and a half ago and have been recovering from a herniated and compressed “degenerated” disk.  I’m much better now, but have I better and worse days.

I want to thank you for being such a beautiful person – what a beautiful spirit you have!- , a wonderful instructor, and for your time and energy to share what you know with all of us.  It is priceless.

Dry Weather Foot Care

Our Colorado climate is very dry, so this means taking extra good care of your skin, especially in the winter.   Here are a few things that I do that have helped me.

1) Good foot technique.  We use the heel lead in Nia to build a strong connection to leg and body.  Also, the heel lead will reduce the amount of friction the skin of foot experiences while dancing barefoot. Do you best to step solidly to prevent sliding forward or to the side.  Sliding creates friction, just what we want to avoid.  Good foot technique will allow you to feel more centered and balanced while moving and also prevent friction to the skin of the foot.

2) Exfoliation.  My current favorite is the Pumi Bar, which you can get at Sally's.  It comes in regular and extra coarse, and is inexpensive.

3)  Foot baths.  I'm a big believer of caring for my feet!  We often spend lots of time caring for our face or hands and maybe not enough on our feet which do so much for us each day!  Nice things that I do for my feet are foot massage, applying ice, or foot baths with soothing salts and essential oils.  Check out the health and beauty section of our local health food store to find treats for your feet.

4) Foot massage.  There are thousands of sensory nerve endings on the soles of your feet.  Ask me in class, and we'll do some foot massage during our cooldown.  You can use foot massage at home to bring gentle comfort to your feet and the feet of those you love!

5) Replenshing oils.  In dry climates, our skin tends to loose moisture and suppleness.  There is one plant oil, Jojoba oil, that can be absorbed by the skin, to relieve that dryness.  I like to add a few drops of Jojoba oil to the lotion that I rub on my feet before I go to bed.  This allows the skin to be moisturized while I sleep!  I have found this to be more effective than any other moisturizer I have tried.  Jojoba oil can be found at the local health food store in the health and beauty section.

Marcia’s Chocolate Cupcakes, makes 12 (Altitude Recipe)

In a sauce pan over medium heat, melt:
12 oz. package of Ghiardelli’s Semi-sweet Chocolate chips
½ cup sugar
½ cup water
½ - ¾ stick of butter or margarine

Take this off the heat and let it cool a little

Mix in 4 slightly beaten eggs, use a wire wisk, mix until homogeneous

Pour batter into paper lined muffin tins.  You gotta’ use the paper liners, you’ll find out why!

Cook at 425 for 15 minutes (low altitude probably 350).  Your oven may be hotter or cooler, so try for a less time the first time you make these, and adjust from there!

You can also make this in a springform pan, the result is a chocolate mouse cake that is gluten free!
